Duster and Dust FAQs

No one really enjoys cleaning up dust, but alas, it is a necessary chore.

But what even is dust? Where does it come from, where does it go? What's the best method for cleaning it?

If you've thought about any of these queries and more, check out this guide of most frequently asked questions for the pesky gross stuff and the dusters we use to get rid of it.

  • Dust mite allergy is an allergic response to the microscopic bugs that live in house dust. These tiny arthropods are related to spiders and ticks, and feed mostly on skin cells that people shed every day (pretty gross, if you ask us). While these creatures can't be seen by the naked eye, they account for a staggering 10%–50% of all household allergens!

Common symptoms of a dust mite allergy include sneezing, runny nose, coughing, wheezing, itchy eyes or throat, headaches and difficulty breathing. However, some people may not experience any physical symptoms at all. People with allergies may also find their asthma worsening due to exposure to dust mites.

  • In short, yes, wet dusting is better than dry dusting because the moisture helps dust and other debris adhere to the cleaning material used (such as a damp cloth).

That being said, it is not always necessary to utilize cleaning sprays and the like when using the products on our list above, especially the Swiffer duster which have patented Dust-Lock Adhesive properties which acts in a similar way to "wet dusting", but without the moisture.

  • Indoor dust is made by a variety of factors with the most common being from pet dander, carpet and upholstery, hair, clothing, bedding, and us humans (i.e. dead skin cells and such).

  • The most dust in any room tends to settle on flat or undisturbed surfaces such as floors, shelves, and even under beds.

It is important to give these areas a good cleaning to help reduce allergens and for general maintenance standards.

  • A good rule of thumb is to dust before vacuuming in your cleaning routine. This way, there is less chance of dust being blown around by running a vacuum.

  • Terracycle is a recycling company that has partnered with Swiffer to recycle used Swiffer products, including: Swiffer Sweeper, Duster, and WetJet pads.

Once you create an account through Terracycle, you simply collect your used Swiffer products in a box, print out a shipping label, and send it all off to Terracycle to be recycled.
